Term Project for Principles of New Media

As agreed upon between my group, the topic of our term project will deal with "Social Media Scares". We will basically be discussing the woes and faux pas that arise from every day social media exposure; i.e) too much personal and business related info shared on facebook, increases in security threats, identity theft, etc.

As my contribution on this project, I will primarily be discussing issues with company/work e-mail, spam, malware, and viruses. I'm sure it's not news to hear that not every hour of every work day is spent on actual work. I'm sure a majority of us are loging into facebook and checking "funny forwards" at least once a day while on the job. Say you do have unrestricted access to all these things from your workplace... what's so harmful about that? For starters, any e-mails sent to your work e-mail can easily be accessed and read by employers. Now I know this touches on the issue of privacy but I wasn't referring to any sort of "snooping". A fellow employee of the company who deals primarily with "IT stuff" may just happen to just be clearing space on the program that filters spam mail just happens to randomly come across inappropriate e-mails addressed to you. Say this co-worker finds the information in this e-mail to be a threat to the company or just simply offensive and in turn feels he/she must share it with upper management; what now? Termination resulting from some crude and rude e-mail content "dissing the boss" and which happens to hit a nerve or even a lecture on "why company e-mail should not be used for personal use" is kind of embarassing isn't it?

Oftentimes companies block access to sites such as facebook and twitter and may even implement filters on e-mail inboxes; however, that doesn't mean we're completely barred from accessing any of these new media sources. Iphones, blackberries, and android makes it just as easy to be on these networking sites from the work place. Just because you're not accessing these sites using your work gateway, doesn't mean you can't share the same information that you would be sharing from a PC.

So now... a word to the wise. Be careful what you share on the internet; there are millions of eyes watching you.
